The Alberta Medical Association (AMA) is seeking a passionate and collaborative physician for the role of Clinical and Program Co-Director of the Physician and Family Support Program (PFSP). This is a part time job share opportunity. In this role you will work part time (0.5 FTE) in partnership with another part time colleague as Co-Directors to successfully lead the clinical services and program administration of the PFSP.
As an ideal candidate you are experienced and knowledgeable in physician health issues and psycho-social aspects of medicine. You are a natural collaborator who would easily be able to work in a close partnership with a colleague to effectively lead the PFSP.
The AMA is a hybrid work environment; therefore, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work from home but will be required to go into our Edmonton or Calgary offices when required. The successful candidate must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, when required.

Position Overview
The Physician and Family Support Program
The AMA's PFSP provides confidential support and help with personal health issues for physicians, resident physicians and medical students in Alberta as well as their families. The PFSP enhances the quality of patient care and public safety by promoting health and well-being for the medical profession that cares for all Albertans. The Role
The Clinical and Program Co-Director for the PFSP is accountable for the coordination of clinical services, the administration of the program and physician wellness events that support the goals of the PFSP. The Co-Director ensures that clinical services provided recognize the unique needs of physicians and their families and are based on credible and effective modalities.
This part time role will provide you with the opportunity to:
- Offer a physician’s perspective to the program.
- Lead a team of Assessment Physicians who take the calls from the Assistance Line. You will provide expertise and mentorship when recruiting, training, coaching and evaluating the Assessment Physicians.
- Lead, support and participate in the case coordination team, including acting as a liaison with participants and their families, relevant organizations, treatment centers, referral resources and workplaces.
- You will provide back up for Assessment Physicians and case coordination services when required, including evenings and weekends.
- Maintain adequate and effective clinical referral resources for the PFSP including, but not limited to family physicians, psychiatrists, addictions specialists, community resources, etc.
- Work with the PFSP Program Manager to develop and implement strategies to support physician wellness activities and promotion, program administration, and clinical services offered by the PFSP.
- Facilitate PFSP physician wellness events and sessions as well as promote the program so that the profession is aware of the PFSP initiatives, services and programs.
- Act as a liaison for the AMA with other associations and jurisdictions relative to physician health at the provincial, national and international level.
Education and Experience
- Member in good standing with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta.
- 10 years clinical experience; experience in physician health, mental health and addiction disorders preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of:
- physician health issues and psycho-social aspects of medicine
- work life of physicians
- physician health issues within the context of medical organizations (Universities, Health Authorities, and Regulatory Bodies)
- Leadership, team management and administration
Skills
- Natural collaborator who can work in a close partnership with a colleague to effectively lead the PFSP in a job share role.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain strong business relationships; generates trust and credibility.
- The ability to maintain strict boundaries and confidentiality.
- Effective communication and presentation skills, as well as strong writing competencies including proven ability to develop clear, concise and comprehensive proposals, reports and other documents.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate consensus and negotiate positive agreements with relevant organizations that have diverse needs and objectives.
- Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills. Able to develop creative solutions to complex situations.
- Passionate about continuous improvement and providing high quality service.
- Proven leadership and people management skills; ability to motivate, coach and develop team members; promote cohesion and teamwork; willingness to listen and learn from others.
