The AMA works in a hybrid work environment; therefore, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work from home within Alberta but will be required to go into our Edmonton and Calgary offices when required. Travel to meet physicians and other stakeholders throughout the province will be required.
Position Overview
Reporting to the CEO, the Executive Vice President (EVP) of Physician Workforce & Resource Stewardship is an executive role responsible for supporting physicians in their leadership roles, contributing to the development, optimization and distribution of the physician workforce within Alberta’s health system. This individual will drive initiatives related to physician workforce planning, professional development, workforce diversity, and operational efficiency to support Alberta’s physicians to continue delivering quality patient care. The EVP will collaborate closely with senior leadership, medical staff, human resources, and other key stakeholders to ensure a balanced, sustainable, and highly engaged physician workforce that aligns with the needs of patients, their practices and the healthcare system.
Note: This is a full-time, employment position and it may be difficult for the incumbent to maintain clinical hours.
Key responsibilities
Physician Workforce Planning & Development
- Work with AMA membership and health system partners to develop and implement long-term physician workforce strategies.
- Monitor and assess physician supply and demand trends to inform workforce forecasting and planning. Collaborate with stakeholders to support the recruitment and retention of physicians to Alberta based on direction and input from AMA membership.
- Support AMA goals and objectives regarding physician compensation, practice management, workload distribution and practice patterns.
Health System Resource Stewardship
- Support AMA members in their role as stewards of health system resources across the continuum of care through effective decision-making in the efficient use of controllable resources.
- Responsible for the professional resourcing and operations of the AMA Peer Review function.
Professional Affairs and Physician Wellness
- Foster a positive and supportive environment for physicians, promoting AMA policies and advocacy that strive for professional development, well-being, and job satisfaction for Alberta’s physicians with a specific focus on healthy work environments.
- Amplify AMA member voices in matters relating to physician governance structures and collaborate with physician leadership to address concerns, improve engagement, and enhance collaborative decision-making across Alberta’s healthcare system.
- Sit on various committees and working groups on behalf of the AMA with partner organizations.
- Act as the AMA lead for matters that involve changes to laws, regulations, and professional standards that may impact physicians and medical practice in Alberta.
AMA Strategic Leadership & Collaboration
- Partner with other senior leaders within the AMA and with the CEO to promote excellence in AMA operations, finance, human resources, and member services.
- Provide strategic oversight for physician-led committees and initiatives, guiding efforts to improve operational processes, quality outcomes, and patient experience.
- Lead data-driven analysis to identify opportunities for continuous improvement to physician workforce planning, physician development and wellness.
- Plan and oversee the assessment of program funding, including application and implementation of grant agreements to ensure resourcing and funding is available for physician program needs while being used efficiently and effectively.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and supervision to a team of professionals.
- Mentor and coach team members to achieve high standards of performance and service quality.
- Ensure effective communication and collaboration within the team to meet branch goals and objectives.
Education and Experience
- MD with board certification in a recognized medical specialty is required.
- Postgraduate/master’s degree or leadership training in health administration, business administration or public administration is a strong asset.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in healthcare leadership, including experience in physician workforce planning, management, resource stewardship, or medical affairs.
- Proven track record of physician engagement and building physician unity. Demonstrated experience with physician wellness and supporting healthy work environments for physicians.
- Understanding of healthcare operations, financial management, and clinical resource planning gained through experience improving the efficiency of clinical operations, optimizing workflows, reducing redundancies, and maintaining quality care.
Skills
- Strategic thinking to develop and execute long-term physician workforce strategies. Able to make data-driven decisions and balance competing priorities in a complex environment.
- Change Management skills in driving organizational change and managing complex transitions, especially in workforce planning and resource optimization. Has knowledge of quality improvement principles, performance metrics, and evidence-based practices that lead to better patient outcomes and more efficient workforce management.
- Deep understanding of how to allocate and manage physician resources effectively across multiple facilities and specialties.
- Good understanding of healthcare financials, including budgeting, compensation models, cost management, and financial stewardship.
- Extensive clinical knowledge to understand physician challenges and translate those into effective workforce solutions. Able to navigate medical staff governance structures, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities while addressing physician concerns and needs.
- Exceptional negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Ensures positive and productive working relationships while discussing sensitive topics with medical professionals, external organizations and AMA leaders.
- An active and empathetic listener who ensures physician perspectives are heard. Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey complex information to various audiences.
- In-depth understanding of healthcare regulations, including those related to physician licensing, credentialing, billing, and reimbursement. Aware of legal issues affecting physician practice, including contracts, malpractice, and physician employment law
